Summer CSA | Week 10

Week 4: 8/12-8/15

Thursday 3pm - till Sunday Night | SELF SERVE

13197 10TH St. South. Afton, MN. 55001 | 612.770.7194

NOTE: WE WILL NOT BE OPEN THIS SUNDAY DUE TO CONSTRUCTION ON THE FARM

On the farm this week: So 6in of rain in one weekend was not quite the blessing we wanted but we are lucky to have a retention pond that filled up to store it all to be used later. We are moving into some construction on the farm in the next few weeks. We will be re-siding the current barn and re-orginizing the market starting next week so we will not be open on sunday (you can still come and get your bag, just know it may be a bit of mess around the barn). The week after next we will hopefully start construction on a new barn that will sit west of the farm fields. Our hope is to put a commercial kitchen in this building so we can make better use of not-so-perfect produce. We appreciate you all supporting us over the years and leading us toward this little expansion. I think we will be able to serve you all better in the future :)

In Your Bag This Week

TOMATOES: grab 2 from the CSA table, they are heirlooms which means they are not perfect looking but oh so good. Store on your counter, do not put in the fridge.

Melon: We grew 3 types of melon this year, a light green/yellow skinned canalope that is very sweet and pink on the inside. One yellow netted cantaloupe that should taste very classic and a new little Russian melon that is yellow and red stripes-nice sweet flavor and the rind is kind of lemony. Store in a bag in the fridge.

Cucamelon: these look like tiny watermelons but are a type of cucumber! they are slightly sour and all crunch. Great in salads, fancy drinks or eaten as a snack. Store in a bag in the fridge.

Purple Chinese Cabbage: Makes great Cole slaw or refrigerator salads but can also be added to broth based soups. Store in a bag in your fridge.

Carrots: crisp and sweet and nice to eat. Store in a bag in your fridge.

Arugula: beautifully pepper flavored base for a salad or addition to sandwiches. Store in a bag in your fridge.

Sunflower Shoots: nutty and crisp shoots make a great addition to wraps, salads or sandwiches. Store in a bag in your fridge.

Sweet Peppers: Purple, yellow, red, these are all sweet peppers. perfect for stuffing, eating raw or sautéing. Store in a bag in your fridge.

Filet Beans: These are so thin and perfect, delicate and delicious. Steam or sautéed or boil for just a minute or two to enjoy. Store in a bag in your fridge.

Jalapeños and Poblanos: spice up your life with one or both of these peppers, but be warned, they are hot!! Store in a bag in your fridge.

Kale: curly kale makes great chips or a perfect base for a salad. Store in a bag in your fridge.

Tangy Red Cabbage Slaw | Serves: 8 | total time: 60 mins

Ingredients

½ cup fresh orange juice

¼ cup fresh lime juice

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons brown sugar

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon pepper

½ medium red cabbage, cored and shredded

2 large carrots, grated

¾ cup chopped cilantro

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together fruit juices with oil, sugar, salt and pepper.

  • Add cabbage and carrots; toss to combine. Let sit for 45 minutes or more. Add cilantro before serving.

Cucamelon Bloody Mary Salad | Serves: 4 | total time: 4h and 10 mins

Ingredients

100g cucamelons

120g baby plum tomatoes

3 red chillis

100ml vodka

1 teaspoon celery seeds

1 handful celery leaves

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon lemon juice

Salt and pepper for seasoning

Instructions

  • Slice the cucamelons, baby plum tomatoes and chillis and place in a bowl with the vodka. Allow to rest in the fridge for a minimum of 4 hours, but preferably overnight (this depends on how strong you would like the alcohol; overnight soaking will provide quite a kick!).

  • Drain the vodka-soaked vegetables, add the rest of the ingredients and mix gently.

  • This salad can be served as a side dish or, since the flavours (and alcohol) are quite strong, it can be served as a canapé or a palate cleanser at a dinner party served in spoons or shot glasses.

We wash everything in your bag but we wash them in bulk so some things may need an extra rinse at home. Please bring your bag back next week so we can re-use them! thanks!
