Week 11: August 28 - September 1

Reminder: This week is our final Summer CSA pickup! If you are signed up for a Fall Share, please note that there is a ONE WEEK BREAK before fall pick-ups begin on September 11th.

One of our part-time crew members, Joan, frequently strikes up conversation in the field with a simple prompt: “What’s your good thing?” It’s an open-ended question that quickly launches us into conversation about something someone is excited to share. My good thing is these beautiful carrots we’re harvesting or My good thing is that I’m going to brunch with a friend this weekend! It’s also a wonderful gratitude practice - to name the things we’re thankful for and excited about, rather than focusing on gripes and complaints.

The end of every CSA season is a concentrated moment of gratitude for us. Another great season in the books, full of delicious vegetables, great conversations, and the continued growth of the community around this farm. There are always things that go wrong in a season, of course, but it’s more fun to focus our attention on the astounding number of things that went right. We’ve had a tremendous year for cucumbers, tomatoes, broccolini, carrots, beans, zucchini, and more. The farm stand has been busy every week, Saturday Patisseries have been a blast, and our honey extraction event was a fun addition to our member events.

One of the standout good things for us this year has been our amazing crew. Our full-time farmer crew of Ash, Maddie, and Elisse have filled our fields with laughter and fun all season long. Tina, in our greenhouse, seeds almost every plant that goes into the ground on the farm with a smile on her face. And our great group of part-time farmers - Valerie, May, Amy, Debbie, and Joan –  inject new energy into every week. We cannot say enough about their hard work and good attitudes (and patience with our kids when they’re helping on the farm!)

We asked our crew to share what they’re grateful for from the summer and the list is a great encapsulation of the community around this farm. “Grateful to live in a place where we can grow veggies year round. Grateful for tomatoes. Grateful to be able to walk and lift and farm without injury. Grateful for healthy soil and farm community. Grateful to work with a team focused on learning together and supporting each other, and to be surrounded by people who love food, farming, and caring for the land. Grateful for clean air and water. For electricity, coolers and heat. Grateful to farm with people who bring smiles, energy and laughter to the hardest of times and grossest of tasks. Grateful to parents who’ve never stopped helping. Grateful to feel safe and feel seen and heard, and grateful to reflect on what we’re grateful for, reminding us of the beauty and space we get to be in everyday.” And last but not least, “Grateful for Apollo-sized divots that he can nap in.”

And of course, we can’t express enough gratitude toward the good people who come to this farm week in and week out. CSA members are the farm’s lifeblood and we look forward to seeing you fill the market barn and take home delicious, healthy food each and every week throughout the season. We hope you’ve had an amazing summer eating alongside the farm, and whether you’re continuing on with us for the next season or not, we hope to see you in the farm stand as summer turns into fall and fall turns into winter. Thank you so much for your support.

Have a good things week,

Chris, Ashley, Hallie, and the 10th Street Farm Crew

In Your Bag This Week

Garlic: The best cooking advice we ever received? When a recipe calls for a clove of garlic, use two or three! Store on your counter.

Walla Walla Onions: Sweet onions ready for fresh eating or caramelizing! Store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Cucumbers: Crunchy and refreshing, chop up for a salad, add to sandwiches or just eat raw! Store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Peppers: Sweet peppers are amazing raw, with dips, or added to a skillet or grill. Store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Slicer Tomatoes: The taste of summertime! Store on the counter - never in the fridge!

Arugula (half shares) or salad mix (full shares): Perfect for late-summer salads. Store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Carrots (half shares): These carrots are sweet, crunchy, and oh so addicting! Remove tops and store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Kale (half shares): Hearty yet still tender, the kale is tasting great this summer. Maybe time for some kale chips? Store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Beets (full shares): These earthy beauties are good in sweet and savory roles alike. Boil, roast, or grate into baked goods! Store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Flavor Mix microgreens (full shares): Mild and tasty, these make an easy salad on their own or can add some color to any other salad. Try them on eggs or sandwiches – or anything, really! Store in an airtight bag or container in your fridge.

Herbs (full shares): Your choice of an herb bunch from the CSA table.

Cherry Tomatoes (full shares): A rainbow of flavor, packed in a pint. Store on the counter - never in the fridge!

What should I make with what’s in the bag?

We’re starting to feel fall creeping in, so our plates are a combination of summertime flavors and cooler weather dishes. These balsamic roasted sweet peppers are the epitome of that - summery and cozy at the same time. We’re still making cucumber salads and perfect tomato sandwiches, but we’re thinking about turning on the oven to roast some beets or make smoky roasted carrots. We hope you’ve had a great summer of cooking, and are embracing the oncoming autumn!

If you've found a recipe you're loving, please send it our way. We're always looking for new things to cook and share with other members!

We wash everything in your bag but we wash them in bulk so some things may need an extra rinse at home. Thanks!
